    The Mortgage Loan Originator is responsible for originating mortgages and developing new business for the credit union. You will be responsible for interviewing and counseling members regarding mortgage and equity applications, as well as providing information on other credit union products and services.  You will also perform the preliminary underwriting of loans to determine income ratios in accordance with the secondary market guidelines. You will strive to provide high quality personalized and professional services while maintaining the stability and security of our members and the Credit Union.


    • Generate mortgages through personal contacts by meeting with realtors, builders, developers and/or potential members. Seek business opportunities for the Credit Union as they arise.
    • Works and travels at various locations as assigned or as needed, included but not limited to branch locations, realtors. Attend community events and organizational meetings to establish relationships with local businesses and individuals to generate new business.
    • Interview and counsel members regarding residential and investment mortgage applications and home equity lines of credit according to their needs, desires and earnings to determine whether the loan will be an acceptable risk based upon certain financial and credit information.
    • Inform members of various mortgage products as well as cross-sell other products offered by the credit union.
    • Keep informed of the current trends and developments in the local real estate market as well as changing rules and regulations.
    • Make calls on potential and or existing members as assigned to develop new business and/or retain existing business.
    • Perform preliminary underwriting of loans to determine income ratios in accordance with the credit union and secondary market guidelines.
    • Ensure accuracy and completion of loan applications. Input applications into our origination software system and all necessary forms needed for the processor (s). Provide all documentation to the mortgage processor (s) in a timely manner so that the loan may close.
    • Ensure all documents collected up front are accurate and adhere to policy, checking for conformity to regulations (federal, state and credit union).
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • Maintains a required level of quality and quantity of work.
    • Assists in all areas of the department as needed.
    • Continues to acquire the necessary education to maintain knowledge of federal and state rules and regulations to ensure compliance.


    • Must be registered with NMLS (if Loan Originator has an existing NMLS ID # he / she must transfer all NMLS information within 30 days of the date of hire.)
    • 2 – 5 years of experience as a Mortgage Loan Originator.
    • College degree in business administration or other relevant field preferred; additional work experience acceptable as a substitute.
    • Exposure and professional connections in South Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island strongly preferred.
    • Outstanding networking and outside sales skills.
    • Entrepreneurial spirit and desire to build up a small residential loan department.
    • Must be willing and able to travel independently to meet with prospective clients and business connections.
    • Exceptional attention to detail and follow through.
    • Strong mathematical, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
    • Upbeat, motivated, service-oriented individual with the drive to be successful.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
