    Our Client, a world leader in the automatic splicing technology industry, is currently seeking a Product Development Engineer to join their team. Butler Automatic, founded in 1956 is the inventor of the zero-speed non-stop automatic splicer, and has supplied over 16,000 automatic splicers during the last sixty years. The company serves the world market with headquarters in Middleboro, MA USA and also has a Parts and Service office in Geneva Switzerland.


    This engineering group solves a wide range of problems while designing new machines for rapidly developing markets. The Product Development Engineer is a critical position in the engineering team. The successful candidate will have leadership skills along with their technical skills to help lead projects from concept to customer installation.


    • Use Solidworks and/or AutoCAD to design complete mechanical systems for use in the packaging and web handling industry
    • Develop and release BOMs and assembly documentation to Manufacturing group for procurement & fabrication of automated splicing systems
    • Act as Engineer-in-charge (EIC) for customer system orders, coordinating and supporting activities of other engineers, procurement, manufacturing, and sales
    • Create custom User’s Manuals based on standard product manuals as necessary
    • Support Sales group through development of system layout drawings and technical support during and after sales process
    • Create and update documentation used by peers in the fabrication of replicate systems and/or sub-assemblies
    • Maintain information in multiple databases as related to the design or specification of new components, both fabricated and commercial
    • Assist Manufacturing in the assembly and debug of systems
    • Interface either directly or indirectly (through Sales) with customers in the development and refinement of system performance requirements
    • Act as facilitator/host for customer Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs)
    • Work with Service group to support on-site start-up and repair activities with occasional requirement of travelling to customer sites, both domestic and abroad
    • Work with management and other engineers toward continuous product improvements in cost-reduction and DFMA


    • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of machine design experience
    • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD
    • Experience in the design of cost-effective machines and mechanisms consisting of machined components, sheet metal, electric motors, pneumatic actuators, bearings, and rotary mechanisms
    • Prior involvement product cost-reduction exercises
    • Working knowledge of pneumatic circuits and control
    • Proven ability for technical problem resolution
    • Experience with PLC control and PLC programming is beneficial but not mandatory
    • Experience in web-handling systems and/or vertical or horizontal form-fill-seal packaging (VFFS or HFFS) machines is highly advantageous
    • Familiarity and experience designing products for use in food-processing environment and meeting CE safety requirements is beneficial
